Flat Roofing and Roofing Services in Sheffield

New flat roofs in rubber, felt and liquid, flat roof repairs, and the rest of the roof as well: re-roofs, lead work, fascias and gutters, for homes and businesses in Sheffield.

Flat roofing first, and every other part of the roof

Wales Roofing is a roofing company with flat roofing at its centre. The first five services on this page are about flat roofs: replacing them, the three systems we lay and repairing the ones that can be saved.

The rest cover everything else a roofer is called for in Sheffield, from a full re-roof to a length of gutter. Each one starts the same way, with a look at the roof and a clear price. Quotes are free and there is no obligation.

New flat roofs and flat roof replacement in Sheffield

When a flat roof has leaked more than once, or the covering is cracked and brittle all over, patching it stops being good value. Replacing it is a bigger job, but it is the one that ends the problem. Wales Roofing replaces flat roofs in Sheffield on garages, extensions, dormers and bay windows.

We strip the old covering and look at the boards underneath, because a new roof is only as good as what it sits on. Any that are soft or rotten are replaced. Then we lay the new system, fit new trims and drips at the edges so water runs off into the gutter, and seal every upstand where the roof meets a wall. Every job comes with a written workmanship guarantee.

  • New edge trims, drips and outlets
  • Upstands sealed where the roof meets a wall
  • A written workmanship guarantee

  • Kitchen and rear extension roofs
  • Dormer roofs
  • Bay window roofs
  • Flat roofs on rented and commercial property

Rubber flat roofs (EPDM)

EPDM is a synthetic rubber made for roofing. It comes in large sheets, so most garage and extension roofs can be covered with very few joints, and joints are where flat roofs usually fail. The rubber stays flexible in hot and cold weather and stands up well to sunlight.

We bond the rubber to a clean, dry deck, dress it up the walls and finish the edges with trims that hold it down and throw the water clear. It gives a neat, plain finish, and it is the system we recommend most often for a straightforward flat roof.

Why choose a rubber roof

  • Large sheets, so very few joints
  • Stays flexible in heat and frost
  • Laid without a naked flame
  • Neat trims at the edges
  • Little upkeep once it is down

Where rubber works well

  • Garage roofs
  • Rear and side extensions
  • Dormer tops
  • Roofs with a simple shape and few details

Torch-on felt flat roofs

Felt is the traditional flat roof, and modern torch-on felt is far tougher than the old kind many Sheffield garages still have. It is built up in layers, each one bonded to the last with heat, and finished with a mineral cap sheet that protects it from the sun.

Because it is laid in strips and shaped by hand, felt copes well with small and awkward roofs such as dormers and the tops of bay windows. It is also usually the most affordable way to replace a flat roof properly.

A felt roof part-way through: the underlay is down, ready for the mineral cap sheet.

How we lay a felt roof

  • The old felt stripped back to the deck
  • Rotten boards replaced
  • An underlay bonded to the deck
  • A mineral cap sheet torched on top
  • Edges, drips and upstands finished in felt

Where felt works well

  • Extensions and garages
  • Dormers
  • Bay window tops
  • Roofs where cost matters most

Liquid flat roofs

A liquid roof goes on wet and cures into a single waterproof membrane with no joints at all. That makes it the best answer for roofs that are hard to cover in sheets: odd shapes, changes in level, and roofs crowded with rooflights, pipes and upstands.

We use Sika liquid roofing systems. The coating is applied over a prepared surface and worked into every corner and round every detail, so there is no seam for water to find.

Why choose a liquid roof

  • One seamless membrane, with no joints
  • Follows any shape
  • Seals round rooflights, pipes and upstands
  • A hard-wearing finish

Where liquid works well

  • Roofs with a complicated shape
  • Roofs with many details to seal round
  • Flat roofs that sheet materials do not suit

Flat roof repairs in Sheffield

Not every leaking flat roof needs replacing. If the covering is sound and the fault is in one place, such as a split joint, a lifted edge or a blister that has opened up, a repair is the sensible choice and we will tell you so.

We find where the water is getting in, which is not always above the stain on the ceiling, and repair that. If the roof is past the point where a repair will last, we explain why and quote for a replacement, so you can decide with the facts in front of you.

Flat roof repairs we carry out

  • Leaks traced and sealed

  • Lifted edges and trims fixed back down
  • Flashings renewed where the roof meets a wall
  • Blocked outlets cleared

Signs a flat roof needs repair

  • Water stains on the ceiling below
  • Blisters, cracks or bubbles in the surface
  • Puddles that do not drain after rain
  • Damp or mould on the wall near the roof
  • Splits at the edges or joints

Pitched roofs, re-roofs and slate repairs

We are not only flat roofers. Wales Roofing re-roofs houses, builds new roofs and repairs slate and tile roofs right across Sheffield, from stone-built terraces to semis and newer estates.

A re-roof means stripping the old covering, fitting a breathable membrane and treated battens, and laying new slates or tiles with the leadwork renewed as part of the job. For smaller problems we replace slipped, cracked and missing slates and tiles, matching the existing roof as closely as we can.

Dormer roofs, bay roofs and heritage roofing

Dormers and bay windows have some of the hardest-working roofs on a house. They are small, exposed and full of joints, and they often leak where the flat top meets the slope or the wall. We repair and re-cover them, renewing the covering and the leadwork together so the whole detail is sound.

The same care goes into older buildings. On period houses, heritage roofs and churches we carry out slate repairs with materials chosen to match what is already there.

Lead work, flashings and valleys

Most roof leaks start at a junction, not in the middle of a slope. The flashing round a chimney, the valley between two slopes and the apron where a roof meets a wall are all sealed with lead. When that lead cracks, lifts or was never dressed properly, water gets in behind it.

We repair and renew lead work using the right thickness of lead for each position, dressed and fixed so that it can move with the weather without splitting. It is a lasting repair, not a line of mastic.

  • Cracked, lifted or missing flashing
  • Staining where a roof meets a wall or chimney
  • A valley holding water or debris

Fascias, soffits and gutters

The roofline carries the rain away. When fascia boards rot or gutters overflow, water runs down the wall instead, and the damp patches and green staining that follow are often blamed on the roof itself.

We strip the old timber, check the ends of the rafters behind it and fit uPVC fascias and soffits that do not need painting, with ventilation built in at the eaves. New deep-flow gutters are set to a proper fall so they clear a heavy downpour.

What is the difference between a rubber roof and a felt roof?

A rubber roof is a sheet of EPDM laid in large pieces and bonded to the deck, with very few joints. A felt roof is built up in layers of bitumen felt bonded together with heat and finished with a mineral surface. Both keep water out reliably when they are fitted properly. Rubber usually suits simple shapes, and felt suits smaller, more detailed roofs.

Do you replace the boards under a flat roof?

We check them on every job. Once the old covering is off we can see the deck properly, and any boards that are soft, wet or rotten are replaced before the new roof goes down. Laying a new roof over a bad deck only hides the problem.

Is a liquid flat roof right for my roof?

It is the best choice where sheets would need a lot of cutting and joining: roofs with an odd shape, changes in level or many pipes, rooflights and upstands. On a plain rectangular garage roof, rubber or felt is usually better value.

Will you take the old roof away?

Yes. We strip the old covering, take it away with the rest of the waste and leave the site clean and tidy.

Do you work on slate and tile roofs as well as flat roofs?

Yes. We carry out full re-roofs, new roofs and slate and tile repairs, along with the lead work, fascias, soffits and gutters that go with them.

Is your work guaranteed?

Yes. Every job we do comes with a written workmanship guarantee, from a small repair to a complete new roof.
