Flat roofing in Sheffield, done properly

Wales Roofing is a family-run roofing company based in Sheffield, with three generations of roofers and over 60 years of combined experience. Flat roofing is the work we are asked for most: garage roofs, kitchen and rear extensions, dormers and the small flat tops over bay windows.

A flat roof fails for a handful of reasons. The covering gets old and brittle, the joints open up, water stands where it should drain, or the boards underneath go soft. We deal with the cause, not only the leak. That means stripping the roof back, checking the deck and laying a new flat roof that suits the building and what you want to spend.

Three flat roof systems, and what each is best for

  • Rubber (EPDM)

A sheet of synthetic rubber, laid in large pieces with very few joints. It stays flexible in all weathers and gives a neat, plain finish.

Best for: Garages, extensions and simple shapes

  • Torch-on felt

Layers of bitumen felt bonded together with heat and finished with a mineral cap sheet. A proven roof at a sensible price.

Best for: Most house flat roofs, dormers and bay tops

  • Liquid roofing

A coating applied on site that cures into one seamless membrane, worked round every pipe, rooflight and corner.

Best for: Awkward shapes and roofs with lots of details

Flat roofs we have replaced, before and after

The photographs on this site are from our own jobs. These two show the flat roofing work we do most: a tired felt roof stripped and laid new, and the flat top of a bay window re-covered.

Six signs a flat roof needs attention

Flat roofs rarely fail overnight. They give warnings first, and a flat roof repair made early costs far less than replacing soaked boards and a stained ceiling later. These are the signs we are called out to most often on flat roofs in Sheffield.

  • Stains on the ceiling below

A brown ring or damp patch on the ceiling under a flat roof means water is already getting through the covering.

  • Blisters, cracks and bubbles

Felt that has blistered, cracked or bubbled is at the stage where it lets water in. Caught early, small areas can often be repaired.

  • Water that does not drain

Puddles that are still there days after the rain point to a roof without enough fall. Standing water finds every weak joint.

  • Splits at the edges and joints

Edges and joints take the most movement. Once a lap opens or the felt splits at a corner, the boards underneath start to get wet.

  • Damp or mould indoors

Damp or mould on the wall just below a flat roof is often the first sign of a slow leak at the edge or an upstand.

  • An old felt roof

Older felt goes brittle with age. If yours was down before you moved in and is starting to look tired, have it checked before it leaks.

A roofer Sheffield homeowners come back to

  • Three generations of roofers

A family-run firm, with the trade passed down from father to son and over 60 years of combined experience.

  • Flat roofing is our speciality

Rubber, felt and liquid. We lay all three, so the advice you get is about your roof, not about the one system a firm happens to sell.

  • Straight advice

If a repair will do the job we will say so. If the roof needs replacing we will show you why before you decide anything.

  • Guaranteed in writing

Every job comes with a written workmanship guarantee, and we use quality materials so the roof is one you do not have to think about again.

  • Clean and tidy

We keep the work area clean, strip and remove the old roof and take all the waste away with us.

  • Easy to reach

Working hours are 7am to 7pm, with a 24-hour emergency call out, 7 days a week.

A Sheffield roofing company for the whole roof

Flat roofs are where we are best known, but they are seldom the only thing on a house that needs a roofer. The same team re-roofs houses, repairs slates and tiles, renews lead work and replaces fascias, soffits and gutters, so you can deal with one roofing company for everything above the walls.

Here is everything Wales Roofing provides. Choose a service to read more about it.

How much does a new flat roof cost in Sheffield?

It depends on the size of the roof, the system you choose, the state of the boards underneath and how easy the roof is to reach. A small bay top is a very different job from a double garage. We look at the roof first and give you a clear price before any work starts. Quotes are free and there is no obligation.

Which flat roof is best: rubber, felt or liquid?

Each suits a different roof. Rubber (EPDM) has very few joints and is ideal for garages and simple extensions. Torch-on felt is a proven, cost-effective choice that copes well with dormers and bay tops. Liquid roofing forms one seamless membrane and is the answer for awkward shapes. We will recommend one when we have seen your roof.

How long does a flat roof last?

A modern flat roof, laid properly on a sound deck, should give you decades of service. How long depends on the system, the fall of the roof and the detail at the edges and upstands, which is where most flat roofs fail first.

Can my flat roof be repaired, or does it need replacing?

If the leak has one clear cause, such as a split joint or a lifted edge, and the rest of the covering is sound, a repair makes sense. If the felt is brittle or blistered all over, or the boards underneath are wet, patches will not last and a new flat roof is better value. We tell you honestly which it is.

Why does water sit on my flat roof?

A flat roof is never truly flat. It needs a slight fall so rain runs to the gutter. If the fall is too shallow, the deck has sagged or an outlet is blocked, water stands in puddles. Standing water adds weight and finds weak joints, so it is worth putting right when the roof is replaced.

Do you offer an emergency call out for a leaking flat roof?

Yes. Our emergency call out runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. If water is coming in, call 07759 648159 and we will tell you what to do straight away and come out to make the roof watertight.

Do you only fit flat roofs?

No. Flat roofing is our speciality, but Wales Roofing is a roofing company for the whole roof. We also re-roof houses, repair slate and tile roofs, renew lead work and replace fascias, soffits and gutters.

Which parts of Sheffield do you cover?

All of it. We are based in Sheffield and work in every part of the city, from Woodseats and Nether Edge to Hillsborough, Handsworth and Chapeltown, as well as Rotherham, Dronfield, Chesterfield and the rest of South Yorkshire.
